This is especially important to consider if you are moving into a vacation town that’s extra-busy during the summer months or a college town that’s extra-slow during the summer months. Visualize what the area will look like during other times of the year and ask around to see how the atmosphere changes. Your summer oasis might turn into party central once the college up the street starts classes, so plan ahead.
Time Your Commute
If you are going to be moving to an apartment that is significantly further away from your job than your current location, time your commute one or two days. Drive to your future apartment home candidate and then leave at the same time you typically leave on a weekday. How long does it take to get there? Are there particularly frustrating or unreliable things about the drive? Is the only route from your new apartment home that isn’t traffic-laden a toll road? Will you pay the toll for the added convenience and time savings?
Be Prepared
While there are more apartments available during the summer months, that also means stiffer competition. Make sure that you have all of your apartment-hunting supplies and documents in order including the deposit amount, any associated fees, your paystubs, and any application materials that you will need. Be prepared to move quickly if you find a space that you truly love.
