Did you make new year’s resolutions to eat healthier or work out more? Check out our tips on how to keep those goals!

With the new year comes resolutions, and many people vow to give up junk food and go to the gym every day. While it’s great to have healthy resolutions, it’s important to be realistic about your goals, so they are attainable! If you’ve struggled in the past with keeping resolutions, we have a few tips on how to keep them and have a happy and healthy 2018. For our Harborside Village residents, come check out our fitness center, open from 5 am to 11 pm!

Know Your Intentions

We’re only a few days into January now, but it’s time to remind yourself why you chose your resolution, whether it’s to workout more, eat more vegetables, are just have a healthier lifestyle in general. If you’re focused on becoming healthier or losing a few pounds, remind yourself of all the benefits that will come with your resolution. Many people fall off the wagon early, but the trick to sticking with your goals is to continually remind yourself of all the good you’re doing for your mind and body. When you think about these short term and long term benefits, you’ll be motivated to keep up with your exercise and healthy eating.

Start Simple

No one becomes healthier overnight, as it takes a lot of hard work and balance. Tell yourself now that you know you won’t meet all of your goals by the end of the month, as that is simply unrealistic- and even if you do, the changes aren’t likely to last. Implement daily changes to move towards your goal, such as adding an extra serving of fruit and vegetables to your day, and gradually eating more as the weeks go on. As for exercise, if you’ve not exercised in a long time, don’t start with a two-hour intense workout! Start light, remembering to stretch and take care of your body, and make the workouts harder as you go.

Balance

While you don’t want to set unrealistic goals, you also don’t want to make your resolutions too easy. If they are too easy to achieve, you may not push yourself as hard as you can. Harder goals are more motivating in the beginning, but goals that are unattainable result in giving up on the resolutions early. To find this balance in between unrealistic and too easy, you must think hard about what is doable. Don’t promise to never eat your favorite food and dessert, as you are not likely to keep that goal- and don’t need to! There’s nothing wrong with treating yourself now and then, as everything in moderation is the key to a healthy and happy life.
