Here’s what to do when you get locked out of your apartment and how to prevent it from happening again!

With everything going on in our busy lives, many of us have been in the position where we forgot something important in our apartment. One of the worst instances of this is when you forget your key, and your front door automatically locks behind you. While this may seem like the worst situation, there are a few ways to handle it to get back into your home as quickly as possible!

Call The Leasing Office

Your first step should be to call your apartment’s leasing office, as they may have an extra copy of your key. Remember, you aren’t the first person to every lock themselves out, so they will have experience on what to do and how to help you out quickly. Most apartment communities have a lockout policy that allows you to use the spare key with no fees, but if you find yourself getting locked out multiple times, you may be charged a fine for a replacement fee. Check up on your apartment’s specific rules to know what to expect if you get locked out again!

Contact A Locksmith

If you rent from an individual landlord and don’t have a leasing office, your situation will be a little different. Start by calling your landlord to see if they have a spare key available or a locksmith referral. A professional locksmith will be able to unlock your door without damaging your lock- but it’s essential to call your landlord or property manager if you need to change your locks.

How To Prevent Getting Locked Out

No one wants to go through the stressful situation of not being able to get into their home, so we should do all we can to prevent getting locked out! First, you should keep a spare key in a safe location that you have easy access to, such as the glove box in your car. You may have heard of people keeping their keys in outdoor locations, but common spots like under the welcome mat or in a decorative rock are too obvious and may result in a break-in.

If you don’t have a safe place to put your extra key, consider giving it to someone you trust, ideally a neighbor. There are many reasons why it’s important to have a neighbor’s phone number, but being able to contact someone when you’re locked out is probably the most crucial reason! Just be sure that you trust them to keep it safe before handing over your only spare key.
