There’s never a bad time to find a new apartment– but it can be difficult to move in while it’s snowy and icy outside. If you’re planning on moving this winter, check out these tips to make sure move-in day goes as smoothly as possible!

Road Salt

Before attempting to bring your furniture in when the roads and sidewalks are icy, it’s essential to put down some road salt to melt the ice. If you can communicate with your apartment manager or landlord beforehand, ask them to salt the pavement outside your apartment to ensure no one slips and falls.

Towels

If you move in on a snowy day, boxes and furniture items are bound to get wet. Be sure to cover any expensive materials or items that shouldn’t get wet, and bring extra towels to keep your belongings as dry as possible.

Protect The Floors

You don’t want to ruin your floors before you even get to live in the apartment! Protect hardwood and carpet by putting down padding, cardboard, or plastic tarp. This will not only stop the snow and water from seeping into the floors, but it will also ease the stress of people trecking in and out of the cold.

Electronics

Be extra mindful about your electronics, as devices do not do well in the cold. Label the boxes to ensure you know exactly where they are located, and double insulate them or store them in a different location. If the moving truck will be spending a lot of time outside- or even overnight in a parking lot- it’s best to keep your electronics in a separate place to ensure they don’t freeze.

Stay Warm Without Heat

Since you’ll be going inside and outside for a few hours at a time, it doesn’t make sense to crank up the heat with the door wide open. Instead, bring in a small space heater in the bathroom or bedroom and close the door. This will allow the room to stay nice and toasty, and your friends and family can take breaks to warm up. It would also be a nice gesture to make a big batch of hot chocolate and allow your helpers to serve themselves when it gets too cold.
