It does not take much for an infestation of fruit flies to take residence in your home. Annoying little insects that crawl on your produce and seem to multiply out of nowhere. Aside from keeping your produce in the fridge or safely contained, fruit flies can come in through open doors and windows. Here are some DIY methods of ridding your home of fruit flies.
Apple Cider Vinegar Method
Because fruit flies are attracted to sweet things, apple cider vinegar is a good lure. They smell the apple cider but cannot smell the vinegar, making it perfect for drowning them. Simply fill a small bowl with apple cider vinegar and securely wrap it in plastic wrap. Poke a few tiny holes in the plastic wrap and leave the dish out for a few days. The apple cider vinegar will lure the fruit flies into the holes where they will fall in and drown.
Vinegar and Dish Soap Method
Similar to the apple cider vinegar method, this only requires a small bowl, the apple cider vinegar, and some dish soap. Fill the bowl with apple cider vinegar and add a drop of dish soap. The dish soap changes the consistency of the vinegar, making it act like a glue trap. Once a fruit fly is caught, it cannot get out.
Beer or Wine Trap
The easiest method by far is the beer or wine trap. Much like the vinegar and soap method, the liquid changes consistency overnight, making it very difficult for the fruit flies to escape. Fermented liquids are made with sugar, meaning vinegar, and alcoholic beverages like beer and wine are prime real estate for fruit flies. If you want this method to work faster, add a drop of dish soap.
Commercial Products
If you have tried the home methods and can not seem to rid your home of the fruit fly infestation, consider the numerous commercial products. Some take home remedies and make them fun, like a plastic apple full of apple cider vinegar. There are many products on the market that may work for you.
