Tips for Moving Out of Your Old Apartment

moving out of your old apartment

Follow these tips to make moving out of your old apartment a painless process.

So you’ve found a new apartment even better suited to your needs than your current one. Unfortunately, before you can start living there, you’ve got to move your belongings out of your old apartment. Moving can be an exhausting and daunting process for anybody, but even more so without preparation. Before you move out of your old apartment, remember the following tips. By making the moving process as smooth as possible, you can settle into your new home much faster.

Clean Out Your Appliances

If you are providing your own appliances, like a refrigerator or washer/dryer, make sure they are in excellent shape before preparing them to move. Whether you are moving with them or not, make sure to clean out your refrigerator and freezer before moving day. If you’re moving the fridge, you will also have to defrost and dry out the appliances completely. You may consider using an ice chest to transport foods or beverages that you want to take to the new apartment with you.

Reinforce Your Moving Boxes

Before moving out of your old apartment, you will want to make sure your belongings are packed securely. Check every box to see that the boxes are sealed well and adequately labeled. Label each box with the room the items belong in, and mark if the items are fragile. Alternatively, you could use color-coded tape to identify boxes. For instance, every kitchen box uses blue tape. This makes moving and transporting items even faster.

Wait to Pack Toiletries

Toiletries and other essential personal items should be packed last. You will still need your toothbrush, shampoo, contact solution, etc. up to your move-in day. Store these products in a marked container and pack them in your car so you can keep a close eye on them.

Keep Important Items Close

You don’t want to risk losing important documents when moving out of your old apartment. Keep important items like medical records, insurance documents, and new apartment paperwork in a folder you can store in a purse or backpack. This way, you can keep the items close rather than unpacking them days later.

Make Childcare Arrangements

If you are moving with a child, you know the stress that this can add to any situation. To avoid extra stress while moving, you should consider making arrangements with a family member or friend to babysit the child during the busiest days of the move.

One Last Inspection

Before you finally leave your old apartment, make sure to inspect the premises once more to make sure you didn’t leave anything behind.

Moving out of an old apartment and into a new one can be a long process, and you may encounter some hiccups. However, by keeping these tips in mind, you can make this tiring process just a bit easier.
