How to Self-Quarantine When You Live Alone

how to self-quarantine when living alone

Learn how you can self-quarantine when you live alone.

Many of our residents at Harborside Village Apartments live alone. While normally this can be an enjoyable and independent experience, during the COVID-19 pandemic, when people are required to self-quarantine at home, living alone can become very challenging. Without easy access to social events or regular hours at the office, living alone while self-quarantining can become very lonely. However, there are things you can do to help keep yourself in good spirits, create structure in your day, relieve stress, and maintain social connections. Read on for a few tips that can help you learn to enjoy living alone again.

Stick to a Routine

Sticking to a routine when you self-quarantine is very important, especially if you start working from home. Even though you don’t need to “dress up” to go to the office, or follow your usual schedule, you should try to stick to your routine as much as possible. Otherwise, the boundaries between mornings and evenings and weekdays and weekends blur. Getting dressed for work, creating a defined workspace, and eating regular meals can all help you maintain a “normal” schedule.

Embrace Hobbies or Create New Ones

During this time, when we must self-quarantine, hobbies like heading out to eat with friends, shopping, or doing any group activities are off the table. However, you likely have some hobbies that you enjoy, which can be done while living alone. Whether reading, creating a puzzle, knitting, cooking, or more, you can put more energy into these hobbies. Additionally, if there are any hobbies you have wanted to try, now is the time to explore and learn new skills.

Connect Digitally…Without Overdoing It

When you must self-quarantine while living alone, you miss out on critical human connections. Fortunately, modern technology makes this more accessible than ever, but it is possible to become overwhelmed. How do you avoid this? Follow these three tips:

  • Space out your phone calls.
  • Enjoy Netflix watch parties.
  • Host virtual dinner parties and happy hours with friends and family over video chat platforms.

Stay Active with Home Workouts

Finding ways to stay active is very important for both your physical and mental health. You can find workouts of various styles and intensity levels online. You can also go outside for a walk or run, as long as you stay distant from other runners. Try to do a simple workout two to three times a day to get your blood circulating and to give yourself a much-needed energy boost during self-quarantine.

Stay Clean

Don’t let the dishes or trash pile up. Otherwise, your self-quarantine will feel much worse than it needs to. If you live in an apartment that is clean and well-cared-for, staying inside your apartment won’t be so terrible.

The most important things to remember when you self-quarantine alone in your apartment are to take care of your home and to take care of yourself.
