Do you have dreams of having a garden but feel like your apartment is too small? The good news is that plants can grow just about anywhere, so space really isn’t an issue! Getting started is the most challenging part, but if you start small and take time to care for your plants, you’ll have great results in no time. Continue reading for a few tips for growing herbs and vegetables in your apartment.

Sunlight and Soil

Deciding where to grow your plants is one of the most critical decisions, as they need plenty of sunshine to remain healthy. Most fruiting and flowering plants need six to eight hours of direct sunlight, so a windowsill or balcony is ideal. If your apartment doesn’t get that much sun, look for plants that can survive with less sunlight, such as salad greens and some herbs.

Since your apartment garden will most likely be growing in containers, you can’t use ordinary garden soil. The soil will compact in pots and prevent water from flowing through, leaving no space for air. Instead, look for a well-draining potting mix to use as the soil.

Best Plants To Grow In An Apartment

There are a variety of plants to choose from that can be grown in a container! Think about the vegetables and herbs that you enjoy eating the most, then pick a few types to try out. You will find more variety with seeds, but you can also choose small plants to get the garden growing faster.

Herbs are a great first choice, as they are a great addition to your daily cooking. They grow well in containers, but they won’t get as large as they would outdoors. You may need to replace them if you harvest frequently, but it’s worth it to have fresh herbs in the kitchen! Some top choices to start with include mint, chives, parsley, lavender, and basil.

Salad greens such as lettuce, spinach, and arugula are quick growing, shallow-rooted plants. As mentioned above, they can grow with less sunlight than other plants require, as long as they get plenty of water.

Tomatoes are an excellent vegetable to start with, as they grow well in pots. Be sure to use a container that is at least 30 inches in diameter, or grow some of the patio varieties in a hanging basket.

Fresh strawberries in the summer make a delicious treat, and you can grow them right in a window box outside your apartment! They need at least six hours of sun a day and 12 inches of soil.
